Bocce is a low impact sport, that’s easy to learn, and easy to play!
In Sun City, we have 11 courts, all located just south of the Sundial Recreation Center. Each court is 70′ long and 12′ wide
with curbs all around it, the playing surface is artificial grass. Two different players/teams take turns rolling their 4 balls, to see who can get their balls closest to the target ball (the palino). Players can throw a straight ball or bank off the curbs to approach at an angle. Sounds easy, but the more you play, the more strategy you’ll learn, getting close, or knocking other balls, or even knocking the palino to a new position.
The courts are open all the time for freeplay by RCSC cardholders (4 racks of bocce balls are readily available).
The real fun comes with the Bocce clubs organized play times. We have “open play” 4 times during the week, when club members show up in force, to draw random teams and play some bocce. We also have “tournament Play”, 4 times a week, where players compete over 4 weeks, with a final playoff, to determine the top bocce players for the month.
The random team pickings for both types of play ensure that eventually you’ll play and meet with most of the club players. Experienced players give plenty of support and encouragement to new players, to help them learn and enjoy the game.
