The Sun City Lifelong Learning Club is an educational organization of volunteers whose mission is to provide Recreation Centers of Sun City members with educational programs at a low cost. Currently the program offers about 40 courses of study in each of two terms (October-November and February-March) and members are invited to select up to 10 classes per term for the annual membership fee of $20. Class registration typically occurs in tandem with the biannual membership meetings at Fairway Recreation Center (10600 West Peoria Avenue), and most classes meet there. In addition, the Club provides Field Trips to various sites of interest to the membership. Field Trips and some of the art production classes require additional costs.
In the same spirit of shared and collaborative learning, the Club seeks and values instructors who are willing to volunteer their expertise and knowledge with seniors who still want to learn about astronomy, archeology, current events, advances in medicine, history and culture, philosophy, sociology, cinema, storytelling and composition, travel, developmental stages, financial planning, negotiation strategies, art production and appreciation, music, and a myriad of other possibilities.
Sun City residents have always been curious. A local historian has documented early interest in auditory challenges and lip reading, enrollment in classes at Glendale Community College, participation in Arizona State University’s Osher Institute, and the tenacity of past presidents (such as Tom Clark and Brian Callahan) which have contributed to the current robust program which has been in effect since 2008.
